Burnley Schools RE Showcase and Exhibition

The aim of this initiative is to celebrate and showcase work done by the children in Burnley schools on Religious Education at the Burnley and Pendle Faith Centre, part of the Burnley Campus. The Showcase was was launched on Monday, 16th November 09 at the Burnley and Pendle Faith Centre by Helen Harrison, Lancashire County Council’s Consultant for RE and Collective Workshop. Children from twelve schools (listed below) contributed their work to the exhibition, covering a wide rage of themes, including slavery, peace, important figures, religious festivals and even one dedicated to Mother Terresa.

Religious Education is not part of the national curriculum, but every school has to teach it. In Burnley we have some of the best teachers, especially of RE, in the country. As with all teachers they work very hard, but rarely do the whole community have the opportunity to witness the fruit of their labour. This unique event is to help the community understand each other better, bringing, we hope, some more good publicity to our town. Two seminars led by RE experts and practitioners took place on 17th November with detailed presentations on the how and why of delivering RE work and an open forum for questions. Participats were also requested to contribute to their exhibition by capturing their thoughts on paper. The exhibition remained open to the public for the whole of interfaith week.
