Easter Community Feast 2010

Following the now established biannual Building Bridges in Burnley tradition, the United Reformed Church, Bethesda St, Burnley, played host to a community feast. This particular feast was to join the Christian community in celebrating the Easter season.

Past feasts have been hosted by Ibrahim Mosque, St Peter’s Church and the new Ghausia Mosque and have been well-attended by both the Muslim and Christian community. The aim of the feast initiative is to bring the communities together in sharing each others blessed and celebratory occasions, to foster new and continued friendships and understanding; in essence, to build bridges between communities.

The Burnley URC was bedecked in its Easter raiment’s, with daffodils peeking in on the window sills and sprouting amongst the green from the large cross near the altar, to the sound of the organ being played by Harry Waterworth, who retired a few years ago, but served at the URC for over 50 years in this capacity. Downstairs, the hall was filled with the hubbub of guests conversing with each other and sharing in the English and Asian buffet.

Over a hundred guests took part in the feast, including Bishop John of Burnley, and parliamentary candidates Cllr. Julie Cooper and Cllr. Gordon Birtwhistle.

Building Bridges in Burnley hopes to continue serving the community in providing further opportunities for people to discuss shared values, as well as celebrate and understand our differences.
