Diwali visit for Building Bridges
A group of about 25 people, some Christian and some Muslim, visited a Hindu Temple in Preston to watch the Diwali Celebrations. The group were all people who are interested in bringing communities together in Burnley with the help of ‘Building Bridges”.
The visit was to the newest mandir (temple) Baps Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in the heart of Preston. The temple has only just opened for worship and the group were the first guests to visit. They were given a real hearty welcome with guides and interpreters to help them to understand the service. The most moving part for most visitors was the candle service where everyone was given a chance to partake if they wanted to. All the visitors were given gifts of sweets and calendars as they left.
They were invited back for next year’s celebrations when the temple will be completely finished.

Amazing Journeys
Over 1430 years ago, the Prophet Muhammad went on an amazing journey across time and space. The journey began when the Prophet lay near the Qaba, the small cuboid building towards which all Muslims face for prayers, when he was approached by the Archangels Gabriel and Michael, bringing with them the stead of the Prophets, Buraq. The Prophet travelled hundreds of miles stopping at Madinah, Madyan, Mount Sinai and Bethlehem, before finally arriving at Farthest Mosque, in Jerusalem. (click here for more)

Each of the 12 faith based projects that featured in recent reserach undertaken by the Change Institue on behalf of the NW Forum of Faiths and the Northwest Regional Development Agency, including Building Bridges in Burnley, are mentioned in the resulting report which illustrates the impact faith communities are having on the social and economic life of the county.
This latest NWDA-sponsored research explores how faith groups effectively contribute to the outcomes of a range of public policy agendas. They do so as they pursue their day-to-day traditional role at the service of the community. The report was launched by Monsignor John Devine (NWDA) on 23rd Sept 09 at the Anglican/Methodist Centre, Ambleside, Cumbria. Extracts from the report can be found on the About Us page of this site. The full report can be downloaded from the NWDA website.

JERUSALEM VISIT
An inter-faith pilgrimage of eight Christians and 13 Muslims have been together for a week in Jerusalem visiting and praying at the holy places (5th – 12th February). Immigration officials at Tel Aviv airport spent six hours checking the passports of the ten Muslims who were under 50 years of age. “This is a very unusual group”, they said as they tried to comprehend what inter-faith dialogue might mean. Eventually everyone’s patience was rewarded by an early morning panorama of domes, steeples and minarets on arrival in the old city of Jerusalem. We were welcomed by the Sisters of Zion at the Ecce Homo Convent situated in the middle of the Muslim Quarter. The pilgrimage was organised by Building Bridges in Burnley. The intention was to learn more about the three Abrahamic faiths, Judaism, Christianity and Islam so as to promote mutual understanding and trust here at home. Members came from many different backgrounds and professions yet were able to freely share laughter and tears together, as well as their prayers and hopes for the future. (click here for more)
