Winter and Christmas Safety Campaign

October 2009Faith Friends

Winter is one of the hardest times of the year for the elderly, especially now with the undeniable impact of global warming. At Building Bridges in Burnley, we feel it is our responsibility as faith communities to try and improve the quality of life of vunerable sections of our community. That is why this year we have partnered up with Lancashire Fire and Rescue and Faiths4Change, to try and make a difference by improving the level of safety at home.

The campaign was launched on 29th October 09 at the Pennine Headquarters of Lancashire Fire and Rescue and was attended by a cross section of Burnley's diverse community. The launch began with a 40 minute tour of the Pennine HQ of Lancashire Fire and Rescue and was followed by a half-hour presentation on Fire Safety in the Home and a 5 minute DVD.

The aim of the campaign is to work with the Churches and Mosques in Burnley by either sending a member of the Fire Service to come and speak to congregations or groups, or to use the places of worship as referral points for people interested in having Communtiy Fire Safety workers to provide a free home fire safety check, fit smoke alarms if needed and give advice on what to do in the event of a fire. During Christmas, they will even check on your Christmas Tree and decorations to make sure everything is set up safe.

If you are an elderly person or have young children and you are concerned about the safety of your home this Christmas, or you are a Church or Mosque leader, then either contact the Building Bridges in Burnley office on 01282 838555 or call free on 0800 169 11 25 to speak to a member of Lancashire Fire and Rescue.
